Enlarged diagram

Distribute every factor, including its sign

-2(3x-5) + 4x = -6x + 10 + 4x = -2x + 10. The second product is positive because (-2)(-5) = 10.

Check your understanding 1 Use a value to expose a sign error

A learner simplifies 5-2(x-3) to -2x-1. Correct it and test x = 4.

Show answer

The expression is 5-2x + 6 = 11-2x. At x = 4, the original is 5-2 = 3 and the corrected form is 11-8 = 3. The proposed form gives −9, exposing the lost sign.
