Count the value, not just the pieces
A 10-cent coin and a 50-cent coin are both one coin. They do not have the same value. Read the value on each coin.
Three 10-cent coins have a value of 10 + 10 + 10 = 30 cents. One 20-cent coin and one 10-cent coin also make 30 cents. Different sets of coins can buy the same amount.
Make 100 cents
100 cents make 1 dollar. Two 50-cent coins make 100 cents. Five 20-cent coins make 100 cents too.
For a 50-cent coin, a 20-cent coin and two 10-cent coins, count 50, 70, 80, 90. The amount is 90 cents. You need 10 cents more to make 100 cents.
Check your understanding 1 A coin is missing
You have 65 cents. How many more cents make 100 cents?
Show answer
35 cents, because 65 + 35 = 100. One way is a 20-cent coin, a 10-cent coin and a 5-cent coin.
Count dollars separately
For two $10 notes, one $5 note and one $2 note, count $10, $20, $25, $27. The amount is $27.
The dollar sign tells you that these values are dollars. Do not add 20 cents to $10 as if they were the same unit.
Check your understanding 2 Same amount, different pieces
Ari has one $10 note. Bo has two $5 notes. Who has more money? Now Bo adds one $2 note. Who has more?
Show answer
At first both have $10, even though Bo has more notes. Then Bo has $12, which is $2 more than Ari. Compare values, not the number or size of the pieces.
Try another way
Check your understanding 3 Count each value the right number of times
One set has two 20-cent coins, one 5-cent coin and one 10-cent coin. How many cents is that?
A separate set has two $10 notes and three $2 notes. How many dollars is that? Keep the two answers separate.
Show answer
The first set has 55 cents: count 20, 40, 45, 55. The second has $26: count 10, 20, 22, 24, 26 dollars. There are four coins in the first set and five notes in the second; the number of pieces is not their total value.
Make 80 cents in two ways using coin values you know. Count each set to check it.
Show answer
One way is 50 cents, 20 cents and 10 cents. Another is four 20-cent coins. Both total 80 cents.
